Chapter 25

The Two of Wands signifies a new relationship filled with passion!

DANNY

“Igrew up in a not-so-great area of Atlanta. My parents had a dry-cleaning business on Hill Street. Back in the 60s there were a lot of race riots and some drugs—not like it is now, of course, and some gang activity, too.

“I was the only Asian kid in the neighborhood, and I didn’t fit in anywhere. There was this one policeman who took an interest in me. He kept an eye on our dry-cleaning business after my dad died. He was a good man, a good cop, and I decided I wanted to be like him and make a difference in people’s lives when I grew up.”

“And have you? Made a difference in people’s lives?”

“I think so. I hope so. For the first 10 years I was on the force, the Hill Street area was my beat. I knew all the families—their children, the grandparents. I got a couple of churches to start after-school programs for the kids so they weren’t roaming the streets and getting into trouble. Then they started day care programs, and one even offered vocational training. I think it made a difference in a lot of people’s lives.”

Cal’s voice is soft. “It sounds like you made the difference. There is a quote I love, “Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do it.”

My hand is resting on the dog between us. Cal reaches over and places her hand on top of mine. I wonder if she feels the little shiver of excitement I feel when she touches me.

“Do you mind if I make more coffee? Can I get you some, too?”

She hands me her cup. “Two scoops. And half coffee, half….” I hold up my hand. “I know. I pay attention.”

While I’m in the kitchen waiting for the coffee to brew, I hear her whisper to Carl, “I think I’m in trouble, buddy.”

The last time I felt this way was when I was fifteen and the girl I liked agreed to go out on a date with me.

“This woman likes me,” I thought.

My next thought was, “I’m a dead man if Biz finds out.”
